An unemployed man in Ireland received a bumper payout on a scratch card purchased during the festive period. The Romanian man, who had recently lost his job, bought the winning €100,000 jackpot scratchcard from a Mace Store in Monard, Co Tipperary shortly before Christmas.
The man revealed to staff at the Irish National Lottery that he planned to surprise his family with news of his win on Christmas day morning. He added, “I want to place a cheque for €10,000 in gift boxes under the Christmas tree.
“I cannot wait to see their faces when they open the boxes on Christmas morning and see what is inside. I am going to say nothing about this win until then.”
He will use the rest of the cash jackpot to visit family and friends in Romania. It seems that the ‘luck of the Irish’ also stretches to the Romanians in Ireland!
It was no surprise to find out that the Romanian man wasn’t the biggest winner of a jackpot in Ireland this Christmas either! A couple from County Armagh, Northern Ireland, scooped the £115m Euromillions jackpot on New Year’s Day. What a way to bring in the new year! Grandparents Frances and Patrick Connolly bought the Lucky Dip ticket online and celebrated with… a cup of tea! Personally, I’d be hitting the champagne! Maybe they were still hungover from New Year’s Eve? The couple has become the National Lottery’s fourth biggest ever winners.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper Frances said “We honestly thought we would never win anything like this. Never in a million years,”
“I’m sure that lots of other people think the same but we are proof that it can happen to anyone and we feel so grateful and privileged that lady luck has landed at our door on this occasion.”
I can’t help thinking that I should move to Ireland.
